Back to basics

A product’s fragrance may not only influence, but also power the choices we make at the checkout. This is true of our skin and haircare products, but what are the impacts of these fragrances on our skin and body health?

Synthetic fragrance components are added to far more products than most of us may realise and can have a negative impact on our skin as well as our long-term health. Our skin absorbs the products we use, so educating ourselves and taking a little time to check the ingredients so that we lessen exposure to synthetic components will mean our skin and future health will benefit.

The good news is that there are many natural, fragrance-free products out there. Some of my particular favourites are:

Green People for organic skin products and natural sunscreen

Paula’s Choice for facial skincare – especially facial cleanser, BHA acid and anti-ageing moisturiser

Faith in Nature for fragrance-free body wash

Aubrey Organics – I love their unscented macadamia nut oil body lotion!

I also love The Max Effect UK and am a huge fan of her natural facelift. You can check her out on YouTube here or on her Instagram page @themaxeffectuk.

Don’t forget that many fragrance-free products often contain ingredients that have naturally pleasant scents and (bonus!) the following ingredients also have unique natural healing properties, so be sure to look out for these when purchasing future products if you want something that looks after your skin, and smells lovely too!

SHEA BUTTER

Originating from the shea tree in Africa, shea butter absorbs easily into the skin and has healing and soothing properties. In most cases, it can be safely used to help eczema and inflamed or irritated skin. Shea moisturisers also make for amazing facial care products.

ALOE VERA

Aloe vera contains cooling properties that can soothe sensitive and irritated skin, as well as locking in moisture leaving skin feeling soft and smoothe, without leaving behind a greasy residue.

MANUKA HONEY

Manuka honey originates in New Zealand, where bees harvest the nectar of manuka flowers. This sought-after honey contains key nutrients that can help to soothe and heal the skin when used topically, as well as having naturally antibacterial properties.

COCONUT OIL

Coconut oil is a non-fragrant plant oil which can help reduce inflammation and is naturally antibacterial, antifungal and super moisturising. It may also improve skin barrier function and repair and fight the signs of skin ageing.

Thinking of making the switch to fragrance-free skincare? It’s never too late to take things back to basics.
