Y is for Yeast Overgrowth

Aka – Candida

What is candida? Candida is responsible for the symptoms of thrush in men and women, and can occur in the mouth, genitals and gut. Normally low levels of candida are present in the gut and are kept in check by large colonies of good bacteria. When there is an overgrowth of candida in the gut, it can present with unpleasant symptoms such as: bloating, wind, constipation, diahorrea, sugar craving, headaches, mood swings, thrush, fatigue and memory problems.

The primary trigger for overgrowth is antibiotic use and diet, including a diet high in refined sugars. You can test for an overgrowth via saliva or stool testing and reduce candida back to safe levels with targeted supplements, herbs and diet.

Top three tips if you are worried about candida:

·         Avoid all fermented foods, drinks, alcohol, sugary foods and processed foods for 2-4 weeks.

·         Eat lots of garlic, it is a potent anti-fungal.

·         Eat lots of prebiotic rich foods including fruits, veg, lentils, chickpeas etc to feed good gut bacteria to help take control of the fungal overgrowth.
